House history
We bought this house in 2013, and it was inhabitable. Over the next nine years, my husband and I (mainly my husband, who is a carpenter) restored/renovated it.
The house was built in the mid-1800s and was once owned by Louis Reinmann, who part owned the lumber company. While he lived on the first floor, the second floor was used as a Masonic Lodge. This would explain why we found the tin ceiling running across the whole of the top floor.
My husband carefully restored and painted each piece of the tin ceiling. We began by taking all the lathe and plaster out, leaving just the bricks. We worked on one room at a time and made each one exactly how we wanted it. Each one of the downstairs rooms has a different ceiling.
What always amazes people is the secret door in the hallway that leads down to the basement. This is disguised as a bookcase.
My husband tuc pointed the entire house and restored all the original windows. We like to think we have maintained a lot of our home’s character, although it has been brought up to modern day living.
